Suzie Miller’s disturbingly prescient play, Prima Facie, dramatises the price sexual assault victims pay for speaking out. This blistering one-woman show wowed audiences on Broadway and the West End, winning Suzie an Olivier Award and Killing Eve favourite Jodie Comer a Tony for her performance as the brilliant young barrister who, one sickening night, finds herself thrust into the flawed justice system. Put the courts on trial with Suzie and writer and podcaster Nicole Abadee, as they discuss Prima Facie’s adaptation into a gripping novel and screenplay set to star Cynthia Erivo.

FANTASTICAL WORLDS. Imagine another world with the fantasy writers who are redefining the wildly popular genre. Australian fantasy heavyweight Garth Nix (The Old Kingdom series) takes to the stage with ascending local star Shelley Parker-Chan (The Radiant Emperor duology) and global sensation Samantha Shannon (The Roots of Chaos series) to explain how they create expansive universes for their epic stories, heroes and heroines.
STAGE TO PAGE. We often hear about novels being adapted for the screen or stage, but how does this work in reverse? Panelists Jane Harrison (The Visitors), Suzie Miller (Prima Facie) and Alana Valentine (Wayside Bride) have all given new life to their acclaimed plays through novelisation. Their books take audiences from the contemporary courtroom to colonial first contact to a side street of a red-light district in 1969. SAD GIRL? BAD GIRL? MAD GIRL? She may be self-absorbed, adrift or unhinged, but the ‘sad girl’ is taking the publishing industry by storm. Debut novelists Nadine J. Cohen (Everyone and Everything), Madeleine Gray (Green Dot) and Jessie Stephens (Something Bad is Going to Happen) have all created unforgettable protagonists who are fallible, at times unlikeable and painfully relatable. Hear from these exciting debut novelists as they discuss making and breaking this emerging genre’s rules, and how they crafted compelling portraits of present-day womanhood. In conversation with The Guardian’s Steph Harmon.

The hit true crime podcast that captured a nation. Join Hedley for a behind-the-scenes look into The Teacher’s Pet. Explore the crime, podcast and investigation that saw justice brought to the cold case of Sydney nurse Lynette Simms.
UNDER PRESSURE. Anxiety is on the rise, perhaps unsurprisingly; it’s not easy balancing everyday adolescent problems with bigger-picture environmental and societal shifts. Graham Akhurst (Borderland), A.J. Betts (One Song) and Erin Gough (Into the Mouth of the Wolf) write thrilling, funny and heartbreaking books that reflect our modern times. Their characters deal with natural disasters, lost connection to Country and community, imposter syndrome and more. Hear them discuss writing for today’s young readers and beyond.
BROMANTIC COMEDY. Rom-coms are literary comfort food for starry-eyed readers. But in a plot twist, the genre’s newest devotees are blokes, who are turning the notion of chick lit on its head. James Colley’s heartwarming and quintessentially Australian The Next Big Thing maps a love triangle between a boy, a girl and a four-metre-high regional tourist attraction. Jonathan Seidler’s latest novel, All The Beautiful Things You Love, recounts a relationship through flashbacks as a recently split couple sell their stuff on Facebook Marketplace. Hear from the hopeless bromantics who have fallen hard for romance fiction, joined on stage by self-confessed genre junkie Rudi Bremer (ABC RN’s Awaye!).

GOTHIC TALES. Delectable darkness is great fantasy’s secret ingredient. These authors examine the allure of the gothic, how its motifs give shape to our most unsettling impulses, and the friction between escapism and a good scare.
A BIT OF ADVICE. We all know difficult people – and sometimes, those difficult people are the ones we see in the mirror. But there are times when we need help to identify and manage narcissistic abusers, interfering relatives and psychopathic workmates. These authors discuss how we can modify our mindset, adapt communication styles and take practical steps towards improving our quality of life.
SPEED READS SALON. Join us for a rapid-fire extravaganza, where a sensational selection of authors will read from their work in less than an hour. Will we beat the clock? Hopefully. Will it be wildly entertaining either way? Absolutely. Come along for more yarns than you could poke a forked stick at and discover your new favourite writer in the process!
PAGE TURNER. You’ll be on the edge of your seat just hearing these writers talk about their books, to say nothing of the thrill of reading them. Secrets, spies and the reality television competition from hell all come under the microscope as these authors discuss what makes a novel unputdownable.
One of the most talked about plays of recent years, Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie is a blistering examination of power, consent and the law. Deftly transposing the dynamism of theatre to the page, Miller’s first novel is an extraordinary reworking, delving deeper into Tessa’s psyche and the complexities and outrages of the justice system. Join Suzie and multi-hyphenate Jessica Rudd as they discuss the story and its global success.
Malevolent spirits and inexplicable coincidences haunt these twisty psychological thrillers, with their unsettling suggestions that reality is not always what it seems.
Overlooked, overworked, and over it...these writers consider the expectations forced upon women, how far the feminist movement has come, and how much further there is still to go. In law, art, family and politics, these books make the case for how women can assert their strength.
AFTER. Attacking tired gender stereotypes, these extraordinary writers consider the ways in which women are personally and professionally stigmatised – and what shape the costs and consequences might take. Rich with nuanced characters and moral complexity, these four propulsive stories flip the script on victimhood.
The growing pains of a generation are vividly examined in these four very different books. Acerbic autofiction, penetrating memoir, anecdotal comedy and the wild world of reality television come together for a session that, to paraphrase Lena Dunham, asks – what if I were a voice of a generation?
QUEER AS. Erudite essays, lyrical poetry, a queer reimagining of history and a unique take on the murder mystery provide very different contexts for these authors’ explorations of queerness.
MODERN LIFE. Neoliberal hellscapes, long-distance relationships and the absolute state of things are all on the agenda in this scintillating chat. If you’ve ever lied about being bilingual to get a job, had a desultory affair with a married man or engaged in terrific and/or questionable sex, then this panel is not to be missed.
CRIME TIME. These authors take compellingly different approaches to telling classic crime and suspense. Featuring spies, psychics, conspiracy theories and imagination come to life.
MYSTICAL AND MYTHICAL RESETS. Ancient tales are given modern twists in the hands of these enchanting authors, who draw upon mythic pasts to break new ground in genre writing. Imagining the what-ifs of history, these books place us in conversation with the past.
