A woman's grief leads her into the path of something more sinister, in this dark, folkloric Australian gothic novel
Emma gets only a month with her newborn daughter before the little girl is taken off life support. She flees to her grandmother's remote cottage in the Snowy Mountains, left nursing her grief instead of her child.
At first, being out in the wilderness and tending to the overgrown garden seems to help. But soon Emma starts to feel another presence in the tiny cabin; at night, she swears she can hear the cry of a baby, or feel soft warm breath on her neck.
Has grief caused her to lose her mind? Or is something in these ancient mountains drawn to Emma, and the promise of a mother with no child of her own?
