Luna, a 36-year-old painter, lives in East London with sculptor Pierre. Driven by creativity rather than money, the couple have always been happy. Until now. When Luna's father dies she begins to yearn for a child, and starts to see Pierre - who she'd always considered a heroic, romantic figure - as an inadequate provider. At a weekend art workshop Luna meets Jon, a married, young graphic designer from Yorkshire.
Jon has always wanted the traditional things in life: a nice home, wife and kids. At first Luna and Jon they think they are worlds apart. But they realise the one vital key to their own happiness is there in each other: the desire for children.
